The Province of Georgia was one of the original 13 colonies. It was established by a group of philanthropists who were concerned by the plight of debtors in debtor prisons in England. They envisioned establishing many of these poor people as newly productive people in a colony in the Americas. In 1732, a group of these philanthropists were granted a royal charter as the Trustees of the Province of Georgia. They selected the first group of colonists to send to the new colony. On 12 February 1733, 113 settlers aboard the Anne landed at what was to become the city of Savannah, so Georgia became a distinct entity the day the charter was granted, but was not yet a "state".

The first government that might be considered a "Georgia state government" was organized when Georgians took government into their own hands when the Second Provincial Congress met in Savannah on July 4, 1775. The Congress named delegates to the Second Continental Congress, which was already sitting in Philadelphia. On July 10, 1779, an ad hoc committee met in Augusta and appointed some of its members to a "Supreme Executive Council," whose purpose was to run the government until January. Throughout most of the Revolutionary war, the British were in control of most of Georgia but evacuated their last forces from Savannah on July 11, 1782 at the conclusion of the war. Governor Martin convened the Georgia Assembly in Savannah on July 13, 1782 as the first government of the newly independent State of Georgia - but it was not yet a US State - the Constitution formally organizing the USA had not yet been crafted and signed.

Georgia became the fourth state of the United States of America after ratifying the United States Constitution on 2 January 1788.

Georgia was the forth state to enter the Union and be part of the United States. The exact date was January 2, 1788. There were a series of treaties that made this happen.
