India formally became an independent nation, no longer subject to British rule, in August of 1947. Despite achieving independence, India continued (and still continues) to serve as a voluntary member of the Commonwealth of Nations, comprised mostly of former British territories and dominions.

British rule ended in the '50s. India is no longer part of the Empire. In fact the Empire itself has changed into the Commonwealth. South Africa, Australia, and Canada are now independent countries as are India and Pakistan. India is on its own.
