King James I gave a land grant to John Mason, this area was the New Hampshire colony. The king charged John to settle this area. However, John Mason died that same year, and never set foot in New Hampshire.

John Mason received the land grant from the Council for New England. He had title to the land that became New Hampshire but he never visited the Colony. David Thompson was the physical force acting on behalf of Captain Mason who actually went to the New World and did the work. Mason is correctly listed as the founder but the work was done for him by David Thompson who was Acting in behalf of an absentee land owner.

It was John Mason who received New Hampshire as a land grant in 1629, but the area had been settled by English fishermen led by David Thompson (or Thomson) in 1623.The land grants were claimed by Massachusetts in 1641, but split off by King Charles II in 1679 to form the Province of New hampshire.I know who signed the Declaration of Indepence from New Hampshire, they were Josiah Bartlett, William Whipple,& Matthew Thornton.David Thompson and Captain John Mason.From my studies, it was John Wheelright.
