Union General Edward Otho Cresap Ord graduated from West point in 1839. Among the graduating class of cadets, Ord was ranked 17th. Ord's war battles are mostly in the Western Theater. Near the end of the war, he was part of a negotiating team to carve out a peace treaty between the North and the South.
Confederate General George Edward Pickett graduated with the West point class of 1846. He ranked last in his class of 59 students.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.

Confederate Edward Johnson graduated from West Point in 1838. Among the graduating cadets of 45, Johnson was ranked 32nd. Johnson spent most of the war in the Army of Northern Virginia. He took part in the Battle of Gettysburg, and eventually was placed in charge of Stonewall Jackson's divisions.
Union General Samuel Davis Sturgis graduated from West Point in 1846. Among his graduating class of 59 cadets, Sturgis ranked 32nd. As an aside, Sturgis graduated with well known generals such as Stonewall Jackson and George Edward Pickett.At one point General Sturgis was in charge of the military force that protected Washington DC.
