According to my research for a history of optometry in Southeastern Virginia, physicians who'd developed a specialty for treating the eyes split from the eye, ear, nose and throat doctors to establish the new field of ophthalmology in the early- to mid-1960s. Still trying to verify this, which is what landed me here :)
