Like all artistic movements, Realism began as a reaction to the world the artists were living in. A lot of changes were occurring in nineteenth century Paris (where the movement began), such as the French Revolution and rise of Napoleon and the invention of Photography. Realism rejected lofty, dramatic, academic ideals in favor of works depicting the everyday lives of the working class.
