In the referendum held by the Howard government, the Australian people chose to keep the monarchy soley because of the options given. In this referendum it was a choice between keeping the monarchy and having the Government choose our president not the people. This was a huge sticking point for the majority who would otherwise have chosen to abolish the monarchy here in Australia.
