From June of 1942 until August of 1943.
The Japanese and Americans fought for control of the islands of Attu and Kiska which are part of the Aleutian islands .
Attu, Agattu and Kiska.
Japan occupied the two westernmost of the Aleutians, Kiska and Attu, as a feint to draw the US north at the Battle of Midway. It did not work because the US had already broken the Japanese code. The Imperial Japanese Army held the islands for two years, and then in an uncharacteristic move retreated rather then defending them. The US still took the threat to Alaska seriously, and put much into protecting it.
During the Aleutian Islands Campaign of World War II, approximately 500 Canadian soldiers from the 13th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group participated alongside American forces. They were primarily involved in the defense of the Aleutian Islands after the Japanese occupation of Attu and Kiska. Their contributions were part of a larger Allied effort to reclaim these islands from Japanese control.
Japan attacked the US in 4 ways during WWII. First, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. 2,403 Americans and 55 Japanese died. Secondly, Japan bombed a US Naval Base in Oregon in 1942. Thirdly, the Japanese made over 9000 attacks to the Pacific Northwest with balloons carrying incendiary devices with the intent of burning the US forests. This resulted in the deaths of 6 Americans. Thirdly, Japan attacked various islands in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands and occupied Kiska and Attu Islands. 549 Americans and 2351 Japanese died in the Battle of Attu, which ended on May 29, 1943.
Kiska and attu
I believe the state in question is Alaska. I remember hearing a very recent report on the History Channel program which gave some information that a small force of Japanese had invaded Alaska with the possibility of invading the United States from that remote location. I also remember hearing from a relative that the Japanese also "invaded" Washington state. I don't have any corroborating evidence to the above, but I'm sure you could research the library for actual facts.
