Officially, The NSDAP (National Socialist German Worker's Party) came to power on 30 January, 1933, when Reich President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler to be Reich Chancellor. There were at that time other political parties in Germany; i.e Social Democrats, Catholic Centrist and, of course, the Communists among others. But Hitler soon convinced Reich President von Hindenburg that Germany was on the brink of civil war, passing what was known as the "Enabling Act" which Hitler used to outlaw all other political parties in Germany. This is a very simplistic version of a very complicated history.

The Nazi Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, NSDAP) became the largest political party in Germany on 31 July 1932, when it won 37.3% of the vote (a gain of 19%) and 230 seats in the 6th Reichstag (a gain of 123 seats). Despite being the largest party, the Nazi party did not have a majority and the German President, Paul von Hindenburg, who detested Hitler, refused to offer him the Chancellorship (although Herrman Göring did become Reichstagspräsident, Leader of the Reichstag)

Due to political instability the 6th Reichstag was immediately dissolved on its opening day, when Göring allowed the Communist party to table a motion of no confidence in the incumbent Chancellor, von Papen, who had been instructed by Hindenburg to form a minority government. The vote was disastrous for the government with 90% of the representatives supporting the no-confidence motion.

A further election was held on 6 November 1932, which saw the Nazi party slip to 33.1% of the vote and 196 seats but still remain the largest political party.

As a result of this vote, German politicians and industrialists foolishly believed that they could control Hitler and tie him into a coalition and offered him the German Chancellorship on 31 January 1933.

Although there were no immediate bans, Hitler immediately began to restrict the freedoms of other parties, in particular the Communist Party and Social Democratic Party, and on 5 March 1993, at the election of the 9th Reichstag, Hitler and the Nazi party achieved 43.9% of the vote and 288 seats.
