William Penn was born in 1644. He became interested in religion and challenged Anglican officials. His parents sent him to France after he was expelled from Oxford. Eventually he returned to England and was able to get a charter from King Charles to get land in the American colonies for territory west of the Delaware River and north of Maryland. Penn and his followers arrived in what is now Pennsylvania in 1682.
