it took away the right to criticize public officials
Some Americans sought it useful, while others thought it took away their right to freedom of speech and of the press
Have you ever heard the phrase "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."? Essentially the alien acts removed this from certain citizens. The first alien act, though, removed aliens' right to vote for a further extended period. Taxation without representation was the key reason behind the revolution. The sedition act removes freedom of speech, of opinion, and of the press in one sweeping blow.
The Alien and Sedition Acts violated the First Amendment of the Constitution by denying Freedom of Speech. The laws made it difficult for immigrants to vote, and outlined new ways to deport them. The laws also made it illegal for people to speak out against the government.

The acts made it illegal to write or protest against the government. For Jefferson this was a basic principal to the founding of the country. He states this in the first paragraph of the Declaration. So, he would protest an law that takes away the right of disagreement with the government. Jefferson was a true revolutionary and felt that all governments needed to be guided by the people. He felt that every 24 years there should be a constitutional convention to update it.
