Menes, the first pharaoh, united Egypt in about 3150 BC, according to modern histories. Egypt was conquered a number of times, but returned to rule by the pharaohs each time until it was finally conquered in 343 BC by the Persians, ending native rule. The Hellenistic kings are counted by some histories as a dynasty, and are even referred to as pharaohs by some people but they were not technically pharaohs. Their rule ended in 31 BC with the death of Cleopatra.
