Who was involved in the phony war?

The countries involved were Great Britain, France and Germany. The Phony War was actually not a war, but a lull in World War 2 which occured after the fall of Poland to Germany. Great Britain and France remained officially at war with Germany, but neither side made any great military moves toward the other, so it was called the Phony War.

What did England and France do while Germany finished off Poland?

After Germany's attack on Poland on September 1, 1939, Britain, France and the Commonwealth countries declared war on Germany. However this period is known as the phony war as no fighting took place until April 1940.

Which nation did Germany overtake in the Phony War?

Poland

Where did Britain and France send their troops when they declared war on Germany?

Immediately after Britain and France declared war they didn't really taken the offensive anywhere. It was the beginning of the Sitzkrieg or 'Phony War' during which nothing much happened. It was broken by Germany's invasion of the Low countries and then France itself. Just to add to what Vincent said, they were expecting the war to be similar to the first war with offensive operations being almost impossible against fortified positions. Thus they took up defensive positions in France to await the German attack. their strategy was to build up their strength, let the Germans waste theirs in attacks on the Maginot Line, and then go on the offensive when Germany had been weakened by defeats and a naval blockade. What does the term the phony war refer to?

The Phoney War was a phase early in World War II that was marked by a lack of major military operations by the Western Allies against the German Reich. The phase was in the months following Britain and France's declaration of war on Germany (shortly after the German invasion of Poland) in September 1939 and preceding the Battle of France in May 1940. War was declared by each side, but no Western power had committed to launching a significant land offensive, notwithstanding the terms of the Anglo-Polish military alliance and the Franco-Polish military alliance, which obliged the United Kingdom and France to assist Poland.Your Welcom! They basically just stared at each other waiting for one side to attack.....
