Sutter's Fort was built between 1841 and 1843.

Sutter got a land grant from Mexico for the land that is now Sacramento. He built the fort to be the end point for the wagons and people he knew would come to CA eventually. What he didn't count on was the Gold Rush that was started by John Marshall at the mill Sutter built. Sutter was also prominent in the start of the Bear Flag Republic. John C. Fremont went to see Sutter before the republic was declared and told him he had to take sides. Fremont wanted to bring the Mexican governor to be held at Sutter's fort, but since Sutter had a Mexican land grant Sutter wasn't sure he could count on him for help. Finally, Sutter did agree to keep the governor and the rest is history. On Sept. 9, 1850 California became a state and because of the gold rush Sutter died a poor man.
John Sutter
Sutter's Fort was founded by John Sutter in 1839. Sutter, a Swiss immigrant, established the fort in what is now Sacramento, California, as a base for his agricultural and trading ventures. The fort played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States and became a key site during the California Gold Rush.

Sutter's fort was built by John Sutter in 1839 in Mexican Alta California and called it New Helvetia. After gold was found in his sawmill in 1848 the fort was abandoned, but today the state of California department of parks and recreation has the restored fort open for visitors.

Sutter's Fort was then used for making lumber... :-/
Sutter's fort is still standing and it never did "fall." No battles took place at the fort. It was built for people who came to CA to settle. Today, it is a state park and you can tour the fort.
Sutter's Fort is considered the oldest restored fort in the U.S. due to its historical significance as a key site during the California Gold Rush and its role in the early settlement of the American West. Built in 1840 by John Sutter, it was originally a trading post and a refuge for settlers. The restoration efforts began in the 1890s, aimed at preserving its legacy, and it officially became a state historic park in 1954. Its preservation reflects the importance of Sutter's Fort in American history and its influence on westward expansion.
