The Missouri Compromise was adopted on March 3, 1820. It was a significant legislative agreement that aimed to maintain the balance between free and slave states in the United States by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Additionally, it established a boundary line (the 36°30' parallel) to determine the status of slavery in future territories north of this line.
Henry Clay served as a Senator and a Representative from his adopted state of Kentucky. He was passionate about preserving the Union and pushed for the Missouri Compromise in 1820.

The series of proposals put forth by Henry Clay that were adopted by Congress is known as the "Compromise of 1850." This legislative package aimed to address the tensions between slave and free states following the Mexican-American War. It included measures such as the admission of California as a free state and the establishment of territorial governments in the newly acquired lands, along with a stricter Fugitive Slave Act. The Compromise sought to maintain a delicate balance between North and South in an increasingly divided nation.

Under the Compromise of 1850, the territories that were able to choose by popular sovereignty whether or not to allow slavery were New Mexico and Utah. This compromise aimed to address the contentious issue of slavery in newly acquired territories following the Mexican-American War. Kansas and Nebraska later also adopted popular sovereignty through the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, but they were not part of the Compromise of 1850 itself.
