Joseph Marion Hernandez became the first Hispanic to serve as a member of Congress; he represented the territory of Florida. He served in Congress from September 1822 to March 1823. He later served in the U.S. army in the war against the Florida Indians, leading the 1837 expedition that captured Chief Osceola.
