Submarines were first used during the Revolutionary War, when a submersible called the Turtle was introduced to the colonial side by David Bushnell. After making several attempts to attach explosives to Royal Navy warships anchored at New York, the craft was lost.

During the US Civil War, a submarine known as the CSS Hunley was successful in attacking the USS Housatonicwhile at anchor in Charleston Harbor. The Hunley sunk not too long after. Years later, divers looking at the Housatonic wreck found the wreck of the Hunley with the skeletons of her crew still inside.
