Gold had been discovered by Russian Colonial explorers as early as 1848 but it never amounted to anything until 1870. In 1880 Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and Chief Kowee made their find at Silver Bow Basin beyond Gold Creek. In 1886 the Fortymile River discovery touched off the first gold rush and produced about 500,000 ounces of Gold (including a 56.8 troy ounce nugget). In 1896 the Chicken Creek discovery was made but in August word reached the miners of the Klondike River Strike (where in the next three years, 1,200.000 ounces were extracted) and the race was on to Canada. In 1898 the Porcupine Creek discovery was made. In more modern times gold is still being found in and produced in Alaska.
