When Teddy Roosevelt was president ( 1901-1909) the teddy bear was first made and named after him. His term in office also named another bear that we still have around today. That is Smoky the Bear. The story goes that a baby bear was found during a forest fire clinging to a tree and saved by the firemen. They took him to the Washington DC zoo and named him "Smoky." Roosevelt is also the president who started our national forest service and set aside the first lands for a national parks system. Thanks to Roosevelt we can have Teddy bears and enjoy the natural wonders of our nation.
