Christopher Columbus and his crew arrived in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, landing on an island he named San Salvador. This marked the first encounter between Europeans and the Americas, although Columbus believed he had reached the East Indies. His voyages eventually led him to other islands in the Caribbean, including Cuba and Hispaniola.
