"Apache" is not the name of a tribe but a group of related tribes living in different areas. Confusingly, each of these tribes has more than one name, so identifying which particular band or tribe is mentioned in historical accounts is not at all simple.

• The Kiowa Apaches, although a true Apache tribe, lived entirely with the Kiowas, a Plains group in the extreme north-east of what is considered to be the South West cultural area.

• Their close relatives the Lipan Apaches were also much influenced by Plains culture and led a similar lifestyle.

• The Jicarilla ranged from north-eastern New Mexico into southern Colorado. They are divided into saidinde and gulgahen tribes living east and west of the Rio Grande.

• The Mescalero lived in the Sacramento, Guadalupe and Davis Mountains and were split into the gulganhende and ni't'ahende divisions.

• The Chiricahua Apaches lived at the headwaters of the Gila River, in the Mimbes, Chiricahua and Mogollon Mountains and into Mexico and New Mexico. Their tribal divisions were complex and confusing.

• The Western Apache groups of Arizona included the White Mountain, Cibecue, San Carlos, Tonto and Pinaleno Apaches (sometimes all are referred to as Tontos Apaches). They ranged from the Pinaleno Mountains to the White Mountains.
