Lord Calvert, also known as Cecil Calvert, established the colony of Maryland in North America in 1632. He aimed to create a place where English Catholics could practice their faith freely, as they faced persecution in England. The colony was named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of King Charles I. Maryland became known for its religious tolerance and diverse population.
The first person to set foot on the Maryland colony was likely Leonard Calvert, the brother of George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. Leonard Calvert arrived in Maryland in March 1634 as the governor of the colony, leading the first group of settlers. He and his party landed at St. Clement's Island, marking the establishment of the Maryland colony.

The charter for the colony of Maryland was granted to George Calvert Baron of Baltimore. He died, however, before the colony was settled. His son, Cecil Calvert or more commonly know as Lord Baltimore, saw to it that the colony was settled. In 1633, the first group of settlers sailed for the colony led by Leonard Calvert, Cecil Calvert's younger brother.
