Meatballs, or at least some form of them have been around for as long as man has chopped and pounded meat into easy to handle portions. They are not attributable to any one country despite the fact that almost all countries claim them as their own. Here is a small list of countries and what meatballs are called.
In Belgium Ballekes or in Flanders Bouletten
Brazil and Portugal they are called Almondegas
Germany they are known as Frikadellen Italy calls them Polpette and are relatively recent to American cooking when compared to other countries.
Iranians know them as Kufteh and have been making them for over 5,000 years as have the Chinese.
Pirates originally come from Jamaica but can also come from the Caribbean.

actually its was first made of Clam Sauce, then they tried tomato and liked it best, then they finally tried meanballs ect. and thought it was good with tomatoes and meatballs so there you have it.
I think that cloudy with a chance of meatballs will probably come out on DVD in January 2010.

I imagine you can eat BBQ meatballs with whatever you like. I have come across many people that like to serve their BBQ meatballs over mashed potatoes. Some use noodles, but that seems to be more popular with Swedish and Polish meatballs.
