The evacuation from Dunkirk saved 338,226 soldiers [British & French]. Although a massive amount of equipment was lost, Dunkirk was probably Hitler's greatest mistake next to attacking Russia because if he had pressed home his attack he would have as good as wiped-out the army and destroyed moral. The saving of so many soldiers, against all the odds, gave a massive boost to moral in Britain - a boost that was never to be lowered, even during the blitz.
General Washington advanced on Yorktown instead of New York because he recognized the strategic importance of decisively defeating the British forces concentrated there. By targeting Yorktown, he aimed to cut off British General Cornwallis's supply lines and trap his army, with the support of French naval forces. The French and Indian War began because of the American colonists and the French colonists both wanting to move into the area west of the Appalachian Mtns. Cornwallis decided to take his troops north and camp at Yorktown because Cornwallis was quite tired of marching. Washington's army and himself were only hundreds of miles north. Washington thought of a plan to trap the British. His plan was to bring his army south to join Greene. So the American and French Soldiers could surround Yorktown by land. If the French navy sailed into Chesapeake Bay, French Ships could also trap the British. Finally the British Army was trapped.
