The Kiowa and their very close friends the Kiowa-Apache were true Plains people living a nomadic lifestyle and living in tipi-style lodges called tou in Kiowa. They grew no crops but gathered wild plant foods to supplement their mainly meat diet.
The Kiowa language is a member of the Kiowan-Tanoan language group, but it is not close to any other language. The Kiowa-Apache, who historically lived and camped with the Kiowa, had their own entirely different language. The Kiowa were often allies of the Comanche, who spoke yet another unrelated language.
Kiowa culture, just like that of their allies, was based on hunting and warfare. The warriors were all members of warrior societies (also called Dog Soldiers), each with its own regalia, songs, war paint and emblems. Society names are the Rabbit Society, the Black Leggings, Tiah-pah, Gourd Clan Society, Ohomah and Real Dogs.
