Kings in the middle ages tended to move around a lot, so they did not live in a particular place for a long time.

They would move from castle to castle as they traveled around on expeditions and gained support for warfare. This movement from castle to castle also allowed Kings to supervise developments and government in dioceses which were otherwise ruled by Bishops.

Castles were usually uncomfortable to live in. Unless there was a problem, such as a war or unrest, kings and queens usually lived in palaces. The difference is that a palace is built to be a fine residence, and a castle is built to be a fort.
