Boswell, pronounced Boz well = "Family separated unto God" At least one meaning of the name Boswell (that is for the Boswells who pronounce it as "Bozwell") is Jewish or Israelite in origin. From the tribe of Levi, Boswell is Levitic in origin and anglicized. The theory is many English people with the family name Boswell come from Hellenistic Jews, from Galatia (Turkey) who converted to Christianity early and were displaced by Islam towards England. Being Levites, they may have helped run the synagogues in the areas where the Apostle Paul (a Benjimite) and Barnabus (a Levite) were early Christian missionaries. Many early Christians were once Jews. The Hebrew consonants of the name Boswell imply that it means "a family separated for God," which is a perfect name for a Levite family. The Levite tribe was separated by God to care for the tabernacle and were assigned to cities to minister to the Jews. They also worked on the temple mount and cared for the grounds and the utensils used in worship. Moses was the most famous Levite. From Aaron's son Eliazar comes the priestly line of Aaron, the Aaronic priesthood. The Hebrew letter "B" or Bet is a pictograph of a Hebrew "home" or "tent" or "booth" . A home is where a family lives so B = Home or Family. The Hebrew letter "Z" is probably "tsadeeq" which is a pictograph of a plow (the kind that farmers attached to an ox) (*"boz" in Germanic languages is associated with the word ox & "well" is associated with a well or a spring of water so some say Boswell = Ox Spring). A plow is used to breakup or separate soil from soil. So "B" + "Z" = family that is separated. (Bozrah in The Bible is a city separated, Beziel in the Bible was an engineer setaprt by God to help Moses. Beziel is from the tribe of Judah. Boaz is another Bible name which means fast runner, quickness, or fleetness.) The Hebrew W = "vav" whid is like two letter "v" close together. It is has a meaning like the word "and" in English, but broader. It is a conector from it we can imply that The "family" that is "separated" is separated "unto" or "for" or "toward" something. EL "el" is the Hebrew word for God. "L" is the Hebrew pictograph for a shepherds staff, which was used for "leading" sheep. So I believe the name Boswell means: Boz = "Family Seperated" + W = "toward" or "unto" or "for" + el = "God." The last "L" may be added just to anglicize the name or to stress that they were Levites who were leaders? - By Robert Boswell - with a Masters degree in Biblical studies and a Masters degree in intercultural ministries.
