The name "Knight" comes from medieval England and has had several meanings and variants. From inauspicious beginnings meaning merely a "serving lad" in the 7th century, changes in the structure of medieval society meant that "Knight" (Knyghte) was an honourable estate given to a man of noble birth by the King. After Norman conquest the term became a feudal rank directly below that of a Baron. Around the 13th Century people with the last name "Knight" often earned the name by winning a contest or by being a servant of a Knight. The name is most common in and around the Kent, Essex and Greater London area. In Wales there is a notable number of Knights in Cardiff and in Scotland there is a small number in Aberdeenshire. The Knight motto is GLORIA CALCAR HABET which means "Glory has a spear". There are several variations of the family crest, they usually include a shield with various representations on it, and a Knights helmet on top.
