The Gabrielino Indians, also known as the Tongva, are a Native American tribe originally from Southern California, primarily around the Los Angeles Basin and the Channel Islands. They were known for their advanced maritime culture, utilizing canoes for fishing and trade. The Gabrielinos lived in semi-permanent villages, constructed homes called "apartment houses" made of natural materials, and had a rich spiritual life with various ceremonies. Today, the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe continues to preserve their heritage and advocate for recognition and rights.
