Douglas is the name of a Scottish clan and family that have, and are currently holding, a number of prominent titles in the peerages of Scotland and the U.K. The earliest known member of the family was William Douglas, known 1187 to 1214. See the related link for his descent.

The word itself is thought to originate from the Gaelic words dubh and glas, the first meaning 'dark' and the second 'stream' or 'river'.
