India became the second largest cotton producer in the world after China by pulling back US to the third position, according to a study done by International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Application (ISAAA).
The country, which was in a lowest position due to its poor cotton yields in the world, has overtaken US by exporting five million bales of cotton in 2007-08, the study said.

The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, revolutionized cotton production by significantly increasing the speed at which cotton fibers could be separated from their seeds. This mechanization made it possible to process large quantities of cotton quickly, leading to a dramatic increase in cotton production and profitability. As a result, the demand for cotton soared, fueling the expansion of cotton plantations in the Southern United States and intensifying the reliance on slave labor to meet this demand. Overall, the cotton gin transformed cotton into a dominant cash crop in the American economy.
The great increase in cotton production in the US was caused by the invention of the cotton gin. Invented by Eli Whitney, the cotton gin was a device that used a spiked cylinder to remove seeds from cotton fibers. Before the cotton gin, seeds had to be removed by hand. Because cotton could be cleaned so much more easily and efficiently, more cotton was planted and harvested.
The cotton gin was first used in India.
