In the American Mid-west, the word "igeroot" or "igaroot" is a synonym for "ignorant". This came to be as a result of the 1904 World's Fair. A whole village of Irorots were brought in as part of the "Anthropology Days" where people from different cultures were put on exhibit and who competed in competitions such as spear throwing and Archery. The people in charge of feeding the Igerots had a hard time finding them food that they wanted to eat. They finally realized that they liked to eat dogs. Soon all the stray dogs in St. Louis disappeared and many pets were missing. It was a big scandal and the word "igeroot" is still heard today, though few know the story behind the word.
I know this story sounds racist, but I think it is true. I would like to say that none of the "igarot" people I met when I was a teacher in one of the Filipino communities in California were ignorant. They were all nice people.
