Recorded as Bonar, Boner, Bonner and Bonnaire, this is a surname of a number of possible origins, each with its own distinct derivation.

The surname Bonner is derived from the gaelic name O'Cnaimhsighe and means "Milkmaid". one of the first pioneers was Michael Bonner who in 1281 settled in the city of Aberdeen and set up a small dairy. He would milk cows and shear sheep and generally muck out. He was the first person to estabilish an assembly line for milking cows.
