Historical Macedonia was an ancient Greek kingdom in the northern Greek peninsula that is today a modern province in the northern Greek peninsula of the Hellenic (Greek) Republic.
The unrelated Republic of Macedonia is a small independent republic of the Former Yugoslavia in the southern Balkans, whose land is synonymous with ancient Paeonia/Dardania. Greece is to the south, Serbia to the north, Albania to the west and Bulgaria to the east.
