Christmas celebrations were deemed by the Puritans to be a time of seasonal excess with no Biblical authority, and were therefore outlawed.

During the Reformation, many people began to consider Christmas a pagan celebration because it included nonreligious customs (and indeed, was actually based on many pagan winter celebrations that had been outlawed by the Church, but were still dear to the hearts of the people).
