Major General James B. McPherson was an outstanding officer and graduated first in his West Point class of 1853. McPherson lost his life in the battles surrounding Atlanta in July of 1864. In the course of some of the North-South battling, he had rode to an area of fierce fighting and was intercepted by Confederate skirmishers. Reportedly he was asked to surrender, but instead politely tipped his hat and rode away from the Confederate lines. During this he was shot as he rode and a bullet struck him in the heart. His horse headed back to Union lines with the wounded general still mounted, but he was dead. He was only 35 years old and was engaged to be married after Atlanta was captured.US Grant and many other officers took his death badly. General McPherson was designated to replace General Sherman should Sherman fall in battle.
