On April 11, 1945, while off the coast of Okinawa, the USS Missouri (BB 63) was hit by a kamikaze aircraft on the starboard side aft, just below the main deck. This put a dent into the side of the ship just below the weather deck which remains to this day. There are photographs of the aircraft in the instant before the impact. The crash caused only superficial damage, though the starboard wing of the plane was thrown far forward and started a gasoline fire near 5 inch gun mount Number 3. The pilot, believed to be Petty Officer Ishino Setsuo, was torn in two by the impact and the upper half of his body came to rest on the ship's deck by one of the 40mm gun tubs. This portion of his remains was given a burial at sea the following day, with full honors, by Missouri's crew.
