American news coverage of the Tet Offensive in 1968 is considered by some to be the deciding factor, and images of the type censored from previous wars were seen on television sets as Americans ate their dinner. Ironically, the Viet Cong were practically wiped out in the Tet Offensive, and North Vietnam considered it to be their worst military failure, but the American public was horrified, and many became convinced that the war was either unwinnable or not worth winning. Bombings of Cambodia and Laos in the early 70's intensified this sentiment, as the US seemingly resorted to air power as compensation for a lack of success on the ground.
