Turkey and Thailand were the only countries which was not colonised or turned into a protectorate by the European colonial powers.

Ethiopia was occupied for five years by Mussolini's Italy for five years (1936-41) and merged with Eritrea and Italian Somalia to form Africa Orientale Italiana (AOI - Italian East Africa).

China was not colonised, but in the late nineteenth century Britain, France, Germany, Japan, held extraterritorial control over many Chinese ports and areas. This meant that Chinese law did not apply and the Europeans administered the law and held exclusive rights to profits and investment. Russia occupied Manchuria. In the 20th century Japan invaded China during WWII.
