There are over 20 sovereign states that do not have a regular Army or an Armed Force, and are very small in size having an area less than 200square miles. Most of these states are either dependencies i.e. most of them are dependent on their past occupiers to come to their defense when needed, Guam, Bermuda, and the agreement between France and Monaco, which was a French colony 3 centuries ago relies on France. A Few other states don't need to maintain a regular army due their unorthodox style of governance such as Haiti, Grenada and Costa Rica, who disbanded their army or demilitarized due to civil war killings, Samoa is another sovereign state which was formed without an Army. Iceland has an agreement with the US, Norway, Denmark, and other NATO countries,

The Vatican City or the Holy See occupies an area of just 0.2 square miles and is regarded as the smallest country in the World with a population of 770 none being permanent residents. The Head of State is the Pope who is also the Religious head of the Catholic Church and having a massive Christian following of 1 Billion Catholics all over the World. The perfect example of the smallest army is the Pontifical Swiss Guard who were non-voluntary mercenaries fighting for other European countries by a treaty called capitulations signed by the Swiss Diet. In 1874 the Swiss constitution forbade the use of the Swiss guard by any foreign powers and through military capitulation.

The Rulings of 1874 and 1927 made an exception, that of the Swiss Guard of the Vatican which was raised by Pope Julius II in 1505, it is at present a fully reinforced company with a strength of 110 Men is responsible for the safety of the Pope, including the security of the Apostolic Palace. The Swiss Guards acts as the De facto military of the Vatican City.

Though other Military wings existed, the last of these groups like the Corsican Guard was abolished in 1860, and two others named the Noble and the Palatine guards were abolished by Pope Paul VI in 1970.
