For a first country to gain it's independence a few basic elements are necessary: 1). The first country - this fact is largely considered unknown but history suggests one of the first country was located in the historical region of Mesopotamia (most likely Summer); 2) the second element is Another Country or region to be subjugated by the first - for more information on the subject check the country and regions around Summer and their history.
It is very difficult, if not impossible to establish both those elements do to the fact that the older the time period in question the harder it is to establish hard facts so the definitions themselves of country and and independence have a lot of variations ergo depending on the definitions and historical periods and locations there are a large number "country that first gained their independence", for example: The first African country to gain it's independence from it's colonial rulers has i believe Liberia but even that fact can be disputed because Ethiopia was always independent except a short period starting 1936, and so on and so forth.
