i think typhoid and paratyphoid might have had a part in diseases which might have had a contribute to many of our soldiers dying in World War II. I know a man that was discharged from the army because of this disease;but after researching these diseases come to find out that if they weren't caught in time it can cause death. It's symptoms are of those with appendisitis; high fever, abdominal pain, intestinal problems, etc. Disease kills many people every year, but in war there are stresses that create extra problems. For soldiers in the field, exposure to the elements can cause pnuemonia and other respiratory problems. Infections of all sorts are regular conditions for troops who have limited ability to clean themselves. Thirst often leads to soldiers being forced to drink contaminated water which can cause disentery. Inability to clean oneself or stay dry can lead to various fungus based diseases. For civilians, there is usually a reduction in proper diet, leading to a weakening of the body. Thus civilians may have diseases from infections that won't heal, typhus, fevers, pnuemonia, scurvy, etc. In some countries such as Germany and Russia many persons were placed in concentration camps. Here the hygiene and dietary issues were even more pronounced. For example, in the German camps, while many persons were killed by gas or shooting, probably the largest number of deaths was from typhus. The Soviet camps were also notorious for typhus outbreaks - the entire German army that surrendered at Stalingrad in the first pocket died of typhus - 100%.
