In 1848, the United States acquired a significant amount of land through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. This treaty resulted in the U.S. gaining territories that would become the states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. Additionally, the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 further expanded U.S. territory in present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico.

The Mexican Cession was the result of a war caused by the Americans attempting to gain Mexico's land. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marked the peace. It was in 1848 that the United States gained 500,000 square miles, increasing the size of the U.S by 25%. The Senate ratified the treaty in March of 1848. The states of California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, most of Arizona were formed from this land.

The land that is now Arizona was originally part of Mexico. In 1848, it was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. Arizona became a separate territory in 1863 and was later granted statehood in 1912.
