Many Buddhist's are vegetarians. Buddhist's do not kill insects,animals,people. Buddhist's meditate in quite places for their minds to relax and 'travel'.
The people who follow the Buddhism faith must let go of this world. Modesty means they realize that they are not significant and that they are not important. To let go of the world you must let go of yourself.
This new Confucianism was created, in part, to reduce Buddhism's popularity. It taught that life in this world was just as important as the after life.
Obviously the Buddha is of prime historic interest as he founded the philosophy and practice that bears his name. There are any number of others. The main Japanese religions are Shintoism and Buddhism. Some people are also Jewish, Christian or any other religion they choose.
Importance would be a viewpoint. Certainly, Buddhism is important to those living their lives in harmony with the teachings of the Buddha. And most people, not of the faith, feel that the teachings of Buddhists are a worthwhile way to live, a great example of self-sacrifice, or at the very least, a fascinating life choice.Whether or not that is important would be based on a person's point of view.
