Mary I, eldest daughter of Henry VIII by Catherine of Aragon, who was actually the rightful heir to the throne, ruled after Jane Grey. Edward VI died on 6 July 1553 and Lady Jane Grey became queen for only 9 days - mainly through the connivance of her father in law, the Duke of Northumberland. But support for Mary Tudor became overwhelmingly strong, as people wanted to see the rightful heir upon the throne. Lady Jane, her husband, father and father-in-law were all imprisoned and eventually executed under the reign of the new monarch, Mary I (1516 - 1558).
