How did president jefferson play a role in the westward expansion
Jefferson Davis was well aware of potential problems in western Virginia. To protect Virginia from Union intrusions from the north or the west, he assigned General Henry Wise , a former governor of Virginia, to take command of troops in the Kenawha Valley. Later generals Garnett and Lee would unsuccessfully defend western Virginia. During the course of the war, West Virginia was created from that part of Virginia.

Sounds like a confusion of two names, Jefferson Davis and Winfield Scott. Davis was the Southern president, and effectively General-in-Chief until near the end of the war. He sent Sidney Johnston to take command of the Confederate armies in the West - a brilliant soldier, killed in the first big battle. Winfield Scott was General-in-Chief of the Union (Northern) armies at the beginning of the war. He divided western command between Henry Halleck and Don Carlos Buell, before his own enforced retirement through old age and infirmity.
