William Penn's colony was unique in that he welcomed religious refugees from all over Europe, as opposed to other colonies that may have tolerated only one particular "flavor" of protestant Christianity. While it was initially founded as a haven for Penn's own Quaker brethren to escape religious persecution, the Quaker's natural loving, tolerant temperament created a safe environment for a variety of sects, including Mennonites, Brethren, Methodists and others.
