Tsarevich Nicholas sought the hand of the beautiful German princess Alix of Hesse, who was the favorite grand daughter of Queen Victoria of England. Now, the Queen wanted Alix to one day take the British throne, but she fell in love with the handsome and charming Tsarevich of Russia. Nicholas' father, Tsar Alexander was not overly excited by Nicholas' choice in a bride, but with his health failing, he agreed to their union. Shortly after the Tsar passed away, the two were married, and crowned Tsar and Tsarina of all Imperial Russia. Moving from Britain to Russia also meant that the young princess had to convert from Lutheranism to Russian Orthodoxy. She took the new name Alexandra Feodorovna, as was customary, and thus began the rule of Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra. However, Alexandra was a shy and introverted woman who was uncomfortable and awkward in public. She rarely made public appearances, and failed to win over her new people, and she quickly became the victim of rumor and gossip. It did not help that she was married so soon after a funeral, and the people of Russia saw her and Nicholas' union as an ominous premonition for the future of Russia.
