While a small group of about 5000 British regulars made up the core of Canada's defence, Canadian militia and provincial troops, along with Tecumseh's men, from a number of tribes, comprised close to 75% of the defenders.

After several American invasions of Upper and Lower Canada were defeated, and the British went on the offensive, the proportion of Canadians dropped.
