Prior to the US Civil War, General in Chief Winfield Scott made four proposals to end the Southern rebellion. In one of them he suggested the "Anaconda Plan", in which the Union would blockade the southern coast, severing their trade, while simultaneously thrusting down the Mississippi river to split the south in half. When his proposal was made public in 1861, he was mocked for the plan which many people considered to be too slow.As it turned out, the Union actually adapted the plan. It then became clear that General Scott knew what he was talking about.
